The Greeks lived mainly on porridge and bread. Bread was normally made from barley because it was less expensive than wheat. The Greeks did not often kill animals for meat, but sometimes a young lamb was killed and eaten in the spring. Farmers would grow vegetables such as peas and beans to feed their families. Most of their food was cooked in olive oil.
